The Grand Wazoo is a studio album by Frank Zappa and The Mothers, released in November 1972. It was written and recorded during Zappa's period of convalescence after being assaulted in December 1971 in London, UK. Along with its predecessor WakaJawaka July 1972, this album represents Zappa's foray into big band music, the logical progression from Hot Rats 1969 which used a much smaller lineup. This was the last release on Zappa's own Bizarre Records label. Like its immediate predecessor, WakaJawaka, The Grand Wazoo was a largely instrumental jazz rock album recorded during Frank Zappa's convalescence from injuries sustained after being pushed off a concert stage. Within the rock gold Frank Zappa as a diverse talent. He was a brilliant guitarist, an unbeatable band leader and an incomparable social satirist. He began in the 1960s as the leader of the wacky avant-rock pioneers The Mothers. His subsequent solo work included everything from jazz rock to orchestral pieces, always with the humor that Zappa's trademark was. He succumbed to cancer in 1993 but the mind boggling fertile workaholic left a immense oeuvre. Genius is a word too often used in pop music, but it has decided deals with Zappa.
